Plácido Domingo, whose full name is José Plácido Domingo Embil, was born in Madrid, Spain on January 21, 1941. He is a renowned Spanish tenor singer and is hailed as one of the “Three Tenors of the World”. His career encompasses a wide range of opera roles and concert performances, earning him extensive international acclaim.

 

Domingo’s career took off with his performances at the National Opera of Mexico. At the age of twenty, he entered the tenor ranks by singing the role of Alfredo in Verdi’s “La Traviata”. His voice is full and magnificent, capable of handling various tenor roles ranging from lyrical to dramatic, and he has created many classic images such as Othello and Radames.

 

Domingo not only excels on the opera stage but also actively participates in concert performances and recording work. He has recorded over 100 albums, including recordings of 93 complete operas, and has won multiple Grammy Awards. Additionally, he has cooperated with Pavarotti and Carreras to hold numerous “Three Tenors” concerts, with their footprints spreading all over the globe.

 

Domingo has also made remarkable contributions to music education and promotion. He is the founder of the world’s largest annual vocal competition, the “World Opera Voice Competition”, which has been held in multiple cities to this day. He also serves as the General Director of the Los Angeles Opera and the Washington National Opera, remaining actively involved on the opera stage.
