José Carreras was born on December 5, 1946, in Barcelona, the capital of the Catalonia Autonomous Region. He is a Spanish tenor singer and one of the world’s top lyric tenors. Together with Luciano Pavarotti and Plácido Domingo, he is known as one of the “Three Tenors of the World”.
Both Carreras’ education and his first stage performance took place in his hometown, and the opera he performed was Verdi’s “Nabucco”. In 1971, Carreras won the “Verdi Vocal Award” in Italy and gradually became a world-class lyric tenor. In 1987, Carreras was diagnosed with leukemia. He underwent a year of radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and autologous bone marrow transplantation treatment in Seattle. In 1988, after overcoming leukemia, he founded the Josep Carreras Leukemia Foundation. In the same year, Carreras returned to the stage in Barcelona. In 2020, he was invited to serve as the chairman of the jury for the 8th Fausto Ricci International Opera Singing Competition in Italy.
