Sabine Meyer was born on March 30, 1959, in Crailsheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. She is regarded as one of the greatest clarinet soloists in the 20th century and is honored with the title of “The Queen of the Clarinet”.
Meyer studied the clarinet under Otto Hermann and Hans Deinzer successively in Stuttgart and Hanover. She first became a member of the Munich Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and later performed as a clarinet soloist in collaboration with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1982, Herbert von Karajan, the chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, highly appreciated her talent. However, due to the orchestra’s traditional exclusion of female members, Meyer only stayed in the orchestra for one year. In 1983, she formed the Trio di Clarone with her husband Reiner Wehle and her brother Wolfgang Meyer.
Meyer’s playing style is astute and highly musical. With her sprightly playing techniques and brilliant interpretive skills, she has breathed new life into the clarinet. Her repertoire ranges from various styles from classical to contemporary, including Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto, Copland’s Clarinet Concerto, and Stravinsky’s Ebony Concerto, etc. She has collaborated with many of the world’s major orchestras, such as the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berlin Comic Opera, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, and the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra.
During her career, Meyer founded the Blaserensemble Sabine Meyer and has recorded a large amount of woodwind ensemble music. She, together with her husband and brother, formed the Trio di Clarone and has performed around the world. Her performing career has spanned several decades and she is still active on the front line of the stage.
